The Challenge at Manele Bay, Lanai
To build this acclaimed golf course, Goodfellow Bros., Inc., barged in heavy equipment and moved a million CY of solid rock, much of it along precipitous slopes above the ocean. Goodfellow Bros., Inc., built The Challenge in a record 270 days–without compromising the pristine waters below–and gave the course enough grow–out time to open Christmas Day, 1993, right on schedule.
Hapuna, Hawaii
Hawaii’s “Big Island” could contain all of the other major islands in the archipelago, but on its Kona Coast, there’s never enough water. So when Goodfellow Bros., Inc., built this links-style target course, conservation was paramount. Beyond the fairways and greens, the course was left in its natural state: a desert of ancient lava flows and sparse vegetation. Goodfellow Bros., Inc., built a reservoir to feed Hapuna’s lakes, and instead of water-intensive plants, used Mauna Kea field stone for course features and walls. To no one’s surprise, Hapuna earned awards for its water–conservation design.
Casa Linda Oaks, Jacksonville
The course at Jacksonville Naval Air Station is in bayou country, a water-management district whose flat terrain and slow-moving water create a crazy-quilt of forests and swamps. Drainage had to be efficient enough to maintain playability, slow enough to keep runoff from entering a nearby river. Goodfellow Bros., Inc., created lakes that could trap and hold excess water even during the rainy season, and, working with the golf-course architect and engineers, incorporated the wetlands into the layout to make the play more interesting.
The Plantation at Kapalua, Maui
Creating the award-winning Plantation Course drew on Goodfellow’s years of earthmoving experience. The mission: Carve a Scottish-style links course from rugged slopes while preserving the natural flow of the land and protecting the marine conservation district below. The result: The Plantation Course earned Audubon certification–and was challenging enough to become the home of the PGA Mercedes Championships.
The Creek Course at Moose Run, Alaska
The U.S. Army’s 18-hole course at Moose Run lies in a region of wetlands and wilderness that is home to bear, wolf, moose and lynx. Goodfellow Bros., Inc., used innovative measures to protect the environment–for example, constructing two suspension bridges over a meandering creek without hardening the banks or preventing the creek’s natural evolution.
Poipu Bay Resort, Kauai
The site is a plateau that sprawls between mountains and the immense Pacific. Endangered geese and Hawaiian monk seals take sanctuary here. Sea turtles and humpback whales glide through the waters offshore. Goodfellow Bros., Inc., protected both habitats while sculpting a world-class golf course. Since 1994, Poipu Bay has been home to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, and has been rated among the top courses by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.
